A Subtle Header Change
Even though I’ve been sidetracked for the past week with my new laptop and Vista Enterprise, I’m still contemplating changes, additions, plugins, etc. to my blog layout. I know practically nothing about CSS. But I’ve got one of the great books of all time in terms of CSS design, The Zen of CSS Design. The book is masterpiece of web design philosophy. I’m particularly interested in typography and didn’t think that the default fonts of my blog (Verdana, Tahoma, Arial) worked well with my Slat Rat graphic. I wanted something a little more whimsical.
The issue with web typography is that browsers can only display fonts that are loaded on an end-user’s computer. So, if you want to use a snazzy font that is available only from Linotype, that font would probably not be a good idea if you are targeting your web site to a large and varied readership. One basically needs to stick with the default pre-loaded Windows and Mac fonts. That being said, there are now many more preloaded fonts than in the past. And one of the nifty things about CSS is that one can specify a primary font and then a number of fall back fonts.
I decided that I would first tweak my header fonts. I felt the original Verdana font was too heavy and had absolutely zero whimsical quotient. The lettering in my Slat Rat Graphic is Bradley Hand ITC, so I tried that one first - with Comic Sans MS as my back up font. Well, the Bradley Hand was just a little too curlicue-esque to function as a header. Although I’m still tempted to play around a little more with it. Maybe enlarge it and make it heavier.
Next, I tried Comic Sans MS and I really liked it. I think it makes a subtle but significant difference in appearance. I also changed the header color to the purple in the Slat Rat graphic lettering. That purple could be a tad intense for a header color. My sense is that it overpowers the body text color. But, I’m going to let it percolate for a few days before I make any more changes.
Anyhoo, this has been lots of fun and I’m feeling like such a web stud - I’m actually changing CSS files and not crashing my blog!
