The Slat Rat, The Ski Boy, and David Halberstam
Sad news this evening, David Halberstam died in a car accident today in California. Neither Peter nor I ever met Halberstam, but we owe our relationship to him. Peter and I met at a singles mixer (can you believe that?). As we were making our way through that whole awkward conversation thing, we discovered that we were both huge sports fans and big readers. So, I stated that the best sports book of all time, hands down, bar none, was The Amateurs by David Halberstam. Peter’s eyes grew wide and he said “Absolutely!” (or something like that). Turns out that Halberstam’s fabulous story of four Ivy League rowers was also Peter’s favorite sports book.
And the rest, as they say, is history.
