On Fire

It never fails in Southcentral and Interior Alaska: a long dry spring followed by a few hot and sunny days in June result in wildfires everywhere. There is a big fire burning on Kenai Peninsula at Deep Creek. That fire was sparked by a cabin owner sharpening his shovel. The sharpening machine generated sparks that hit the hot grass and boom, 4,000 acres and several cabins go up in flames. It’s still burning as I type.

We also had quite the thunder and lightning storm last night. That storm ignited a 3,000 acre fire up at Trapper Lake. This morning, I spoke with good friend and it appears as if their 30 year old cabin, home to many wonderful memories, has burned to the ground. sigh…
