A Low Key But Very Enjoyable, Fourth

The Ski Boy, Tyge, and I had a relaxing day - although I was definitely further out on the relaxed spectrum than Tyge and Peter. They rolled out of bed at 8:00 AM to head off with their buddies on an early Independence Day run. I routed out in time for coffee at 10:30 AM.

This afternoon Peter, Tyge, and I set the fourth geocache in my Coastal Trail Memorial Series: The Rankin Bench. The bench is a wonderful handmade tiled bench located in a lovely spot overlooking the Inlet. It’s one of my favorite memorials.

After setting the cache, Peter and I scurried up to Government Hill for our bazillionth annual 4th of July picnic. It had been raining hard off and on all day, so our festivities were held under that essential Alaska survival item - a blue tarp. As usual, the food was fabulous - pulled brisket with chipotle coleslaw, incredible homemade lemon merringue pie, the cherry cupcakes…The list goes on forever. Needless to say, as I type, I’m beached.

All in all, a pretty perfect day. However, I certainly won’t be staying up for the fireworks. This being Alaska on July 4th, the sun really doesn’t set. It gets sort of dusky around Midnight and that’s when the fireworks show finally gets underway. I’ll be sound asleep by then. Zzzzzzzz…….

Sam feeding Cheyenne whipped cream from the can. Tyge is sure that he too, can do this. He’s ready to give it a go.
