Jungle Geocaching - Hawaii Style

Sunday, the Ski Boy and I ventured out of Waikiki up into the high ridge forest overlooking Honolulu and Pearl Harbor for an afternoon of hiking and geocaching. We did the five mile Aiea Loop Trail - a gorgeous trail that winds its way up ridge lines with stunning views of Pearl Harbor and Honolulu and drops down into deep verdant jungle valleys. The path is narrow, booby trapped with roots that snag inattentive hikers, and very muddy and slick. Peter and I were mud bombs by the we done. When we returned to the hotel, we were greeted by incredulous stares. One woman exclaimed to Peter, “Where have you been??!!!!”. Our poor shoes may never be the same.

But we had a great time - it’s so fun to do something outside of the tourist norm. We snagged four geocaches but missed two caches at the end. We were very tired and my GPS was so squirrelly in the heavy foliage, we could not get a reading. So, we bagged it and finished up the hike. However, of those missed caches was Hawaii’s first geocache and it bugged the heck out of me to miss that cache. So, Tuesday morning while Peter was conferencing, I drove back out to Aiea and hiked in, backwards, about two miles. This time I was successful and as a result, supremely smug.
