I Should Be In Kansas But…

I should be in Kansas, but as I type, I’m at our favorite Seattle hotel, The Vintage Park. If everything had gone according to plan, I would have arrived at the Comfort Inn in Winfield about an hour ago. But today was not a day of good luck on Alaska Airlines flight #582 from Seattle to Denver. Our plane was scheduled to leave Seattle at 2:55 PM - and all of us passengers were loaded on and ready to go by 2:45 PM. And then the clock started ticking. We had a bit of mechanical trouble - something about a “slat”. An hour later at 3:45 PM, we disembarked, scurried from our C9 gate to N10 (the North Terminal - augh!), loaded on another plane and then sat for another hour while the food was loaded. Finally, we took off at 5:00 PM. Life was good.

But…Thirty minutes into the flight, the pilot came on the intercom. Evidently there was a “buzz” sound when we took off. The buzz sound was not normal and possibly not good. After consultation with the ground, it was decided that for safety’s sake we needed to turn around and head back to Seattle. Stunned disbelief ensued. We were so close. Denver was within our sights.

We landed back in Seattle at 6:00 PM and another plane was waiting for us. But, at this point, I decided to bag it for the evening. We would have arrived in Denver at 9:00 PM or later. I would have missed the last flight out to Wichita and would have had to have spent the night in one those skanky hotels located near Denver International Airport. I was just done in - I left Anchorage early this morning and just needed a break. I rebooked myself out at 7:20 AM tomorrow morning and decided to have a few enjoyable hours in Seattle this evening.

I just finished up dinner at the Wild Ginger and am now going to head off to bed. As much as I love Kansas, I have to say that I am very happy to have had a Satay Separator at the Wild Ginger. It made the day totally worth it!
