Trying Out Hulu

Hulu, an on-line joint venture (JV) video streaming service, was beta launched in October. I signed up and my beta invitation came through yesterday. The major JV partners include NBC Universal and Fox. The site is of course intended to be the on-line distribution channel for NBC and Fox - as opposed to YouTube.

I’ve done a bit of poking around this afternoon. The site is not fancy. But it is easy to locate shows and clips and their search algorithm is pretty good. As an example, I was looking for a clip of Arcade Fire performing on Saturday Night Live. They didn’t have the clip posted, but the search engine did locate a sketch with Riann Wilson and Arcade Fire. Not bad. This CNET review does a good job of capturing the current functionality and the site’s pros and cons. I agree with the reviewer - it would be nice if the site had shows from previous seasons. But the overall viewing quality is quite good - definitely better than YouTube.

Hulu allows/encourages you to embed their clips on your blog. So, here’s a funny Saturday Night Live sketch of Steve Jobs announcing the iPhone.

And here’s a clip from one our favorite shows: 30 Rock. The unfortunate part of the clip is it cuts off just before Tina Fey (Lemon) goes up to Isabella Rossellini (Jack’s ex-wife) to tell her that she and Jack are getting married (not really). Isabella Rossellini’s reaction is priceless. One of our all time favorite episodes.
