Pamyua at Bernies
Last night, the acclaimed tribal funk band Pamyua, played Bernie’s Bunglaow. Pamyua is a local native band made very good on the national and international world music scene. I’m a big fan of their music and they’re a blast to see in concert. And what a deal that they were playing at Bernie’s!
The Ski Boy was out of town - actually in the process of winging his way back north from Sarasota, Florida. So, I rang up Mom late yesterday afternoon and said, “I’m thinking about going to the Pamyua concert at Bernies. However, because it starts at 9:0 PM, I may not be able to stay up that late. And it’s an outdoor concert, so you’ll need to wear your snowsuit [we’re in the midst of a very cold summer]. Do you want to go with me?” Mom responded, “With an invitation like that, how could I refuse?”. That’s my Mom!
The gig was scheduled to be outside on Bernie’s patio. Mom and I arrived early in order to get a good seat. We got primo seats at a table on the patio and settled in. About ten minutes before the concert was supposed to begin, it started to sprinkle. Uh oh. The patio was not tented at all. The band and the roadies got unrolled the tarp and got the stage covered just before it really started to pour. At that point, we officially entered into a rain delay. We beat feet indoors, settled down for another thirty minutes before the rain started to let up a bit. We went back outside and the rain picked up again. At this point, the band, the bar, and the audience moved to Plan B - the upstairs lounge!!!!
The band broke down the equipment and hauled it upstairs and we all pitched in and helped. Mom and I again nailed good seats and settled in for the third time that evening. The performance finally got underway at 10:00 PM - way past my bed time!!!!!
The upstairs lounge is cozy to say the least - there were at least 100 of us crammed into a very small space. But it was intimate and it was a blast! The music was fabulous, we had groupies parked right behind us that squealed, “We Love You Pumyua!!!!!” on a regular basis, a mini-mosh pit right in front of the band, etc. It was just a totally great experience.
I of course brought my camera and took a ton of pictures. But what I really should have brought was my Flip camcorder.

The hookah tent provided shelter. I told Mom I’d pay her a ton of money if I could take a picture of her smoking a hookah pipe.

The groupies behind us turned out to be phenomenal native dancers. They were so good that the band called them up front to dance to the “Lonely Reindeer Herder”.
The brand brought in a fan dancer to dance to piece about a willowy graceful goose. Because we were inside and sans stage, she pulled up a table (the drinks were vacated removed first).
