Bear Scat or Moose Nuggets?? That is the question.

Controversy reigns on the Slat Rat Chronicles.

My previous post contained a picture of what I think is brown bear scat. However, the estimable “FQ” thought the scat was actually moose droppings and Beth from Pennsylvania agreed. Although, Peter has not publicly commented on my blog, he also agrees that the pile o’fecal matter originated via Bullwinkle as opposed to Yogi.

Alaska Fish and Game - the alpha and omega of bear knowledge has this image on their brown bear web site. The winter scat piles definitely resemble dog output - as Beth commented. But the summer scat piles look like what’s in our backyard.

Here’s picture from Montana confirmed as brown bear scat:

Also here’s a short youtube video with a closing shot of brown bear effluence:

However, “Was That A Bear or a Moose?” article on the Alaska Fish and Game Web Site seems to clear it up. The three piles in our yard and our neighbors’ yards are very uniform - which is moosey. Bears aren’t the super digesters that moose are. So, it looks like our big pile was moose.
