Our Very Own Herd

Posted by: Steph on October 1st, 2011

September is the month to observe what would normally be odd moose behavior the other 11 months of the year. It’s rutting season. All the bulls are on edge, the cows have the harried look of the constantly wooed and pursued, and the calves are just plain baffled. They also tend to congregate in lots […]

Autumn Guests

Posted by: Steph on September 20th, 2011

Today we played host to a very nice neighborhood family: a cow moose and her two calves. They’ve been in and around the neighborhood for most of the summer. But today was the first day that they actually spent time with us. They arrived this morning at 8:00 AM as I peddled off to work. […]

Moose in the Living Room

Posted by: Steph on January 16th, 2011

OK - the title is a tad misleading, but not by much. A week ago Friday we had two moose, a cow and a large calf, stop by our living room. The only barrier between the sofa and the moose munching on the hedge was the large living room window. The dogs surprisingly, didn’t go […]

A Very Old Bullwinkle Stops by for a Visit

Posted by: Steph on January 27th, 2010

One of our neighbor moose spent some time with us this morning. This big guy is a an old man. Last night, we saw him walking across Spenard Road from Sunrise Bread to the pizza palor and he was moving very slowly. I told Peter that we should take him in to the vet. Peter […]

Bear Scat or Moose Nuggets?? That is the question.

Posted by: Steph on August 26th, 2009

Controversy reigns on the Slat Rat Chronicles.
My previous post contained a picture of what I think is brown bear scat. However, the estimable “FQ” thought the scat was actually moose droppings and Beth from Pennsylvania agreed. Although, Peter has not publicly commented on my blog, he also agrees that the pile o’fecal matter originated via […]

The Kesler-Partnow Nature Preserve

Posted by: Steph on August 24th, 2009

The Partnow Manse is located in mid-town Anchorage. We’re in a nice settled neighborhood with lawns, gardens, porches, etc. One wouldn’t think that we’re at ground zero of The Wild Kingdom. Granted, we’re on the south side of Westchester Lagoon, so we’re a smidge wilder than other neighborhoods.
But still….This is Alaska.
Last week, a [moose] cow […]

Another Typical Alaska Day

Posted by: Steph on February 1st, 2009

Peter and I are settling in, getting ready to watch the Super Bowl. However, we did make one tactical error: no chips, guac, and salsa. Augh…
Prior to morphing into Couch Potatoes, we had an active morning. Peter and Tyge went running with the Sunday morning running group. I did the Alaska Ski for Women out […]

Last Moose Picture of 2008

Posted by: Steph on January 1st, 2009

I took this picture late Tuesday afternoon from a neighbor’s driveway. Even though it was -10 F, this big guy was comfortably ensconced in a snow bank contentedly chewing his cud.

Moose Closeup

Posted by: Steph on July 5th, 2008

As the Ski Boy and I were puttering down our road on our way home, we came up on this guy. I rolled down the window (actually one doesn’t “roll down” windows anymore) and took this shot with my cell phone. Too bad I didn’t have my Canon 30D with me.

Drive By Moose

Posted by: Steph on January 5th, 2008

Tygey and I were in Henry II headed down the little road leading into our cul de sac when we pulled up alongside this gal. We stopped, I hit the automatic window down button for the passenger front seat, whipped out my phone and took this picture. We were quite close - within ten feet.
I’ve […]
